PGP or Pretty Good Privacy is a program that is used for encrypting and decrypting messages or files sent over the Internet. This cryptography software was made by Phil Zimmermann in 1991. The Department of Justice investigated Zimmermann for this, although the case was dropped in 1996. In 2013, the United States government was shocked that classified federal information was leaked by Edward Snowden, an NSA subcontractor, to several journalists through the use of PGP.

This program used to be a freeware but since Symantec purchased it, the free version has been discontinued and although there are still available sources, it is no longer up to date. Its paid version costs over a hundred dollars as their targets are bigger companies over individual users. However, there’s this open source program called GPG that works the same as PGP and is available for free.

Overview of How PGP Works

PGP makes sending of information over the web more secured by using public and private keys. Public keys are used to encrypt messages to specific recipients. Private keys on the other hand are used for decrypting messages. For instance, when you use PGP, you would generate a pair of public and private key using the program. The public key that you have generated is the one the you will share to other people so they could send encrypted messages to you. If they don’t have your public key, they will not be able to send you encrypted messages. Once you received the encrypted message, you would need to decrypt it on your PGP program using your private key. You would be asked to enter the passphrase that you have created during the generation of your keys. If you failed to enter the correct passphrase, you will not be able to decrypt the message.

This works the same with other people to whom you would be sending the encrypted messages to. They also need to have the PGP program installed on their computers for generating keys, as well as for encrypting and decrypting messages. If you would be sending an encrypted message to others, you would need their public keys. They may send it to you via email, chat or other means. Once you have their public key, add this on your list of keys and you would be able to encrypt a message to be sent to them. Once the message is encrypted, you may send it via email and the recipient would decrypt it to read the message in plaintext.

When a message is encrypted, the plaintext message would be converted into a gibberish text that wouldn’t make sense simply by looking at it. This makes it secured from people who shouldn’t see it. Only the intended recipient would be able to view its content as long as he is the only one who knows his private key. The encryption is also strong that it would be difficult for hackers to decipher the content. Moreover, it has this feature called the digital signature that can be used when sending an encrypted message. This digital signature is unique to the sender so even if a slight change is detected during the process of being sent to the recipient, the message would be considered unsecured and may have been altered or accessed along the way.

How to Get and Use PGP

Now that you have a general knowledge of the use of PGP, we’ll now move on to its download, installation and use.

Download PGP

versions-of-pgp

Head to https://www.symantec.com/products/information-protection/encryption to browse on the encryption software provided by Symantec. However, if you want to downloaded the free PGP program, you may still do so at http://www.pgpi.org/. Note that the version available on this page is no longer updated, although it would still work but without the latest features that the new PGP programs may have to offer. Download the PGP version compatible to your computer, as well as the file at http://www.pgpi.org/cgi/download.cgi?filename=PGPfreeware703Hotfix1.zip in order to get the full version.

Install PGP

After the download is complete, it’s time to install the program. Here are the steps:

  1. Look for the zipped file PGPFW703.zip and unzip it using WinZip. If you don’t have WinZip installed on your computer, you need to download and install it before you can proceed with the unzipping of file.
  2. Double click the said file to start the extraction process. Once completed, you will be asked to run the installer.
  3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  4. Restart the computer to complete the installation.

Generate Public and Private Keys

Once you have PGP installed, the first thing you need to do is to generate a pair of public and private keys. As mentioned, you would need these in encrypting and decrypting messages.

  1. Click the PGP icon on your system tray and choose PGPkeys. Another way is to click the Start button, select Programs, choose PGP and click PGPkeys. Both of these methods would open the PGPkeys window.
  2. Select the Generate New Keypair icon and the generation wizard will show up.
  3. Click Next and select that You’re Not an Expert since you are just starting to use PGP.
  4. Click Next and enter your name and email address.
  5. Click Next and enter a passphrase that should be at least 8 characters long. It should be difficult for others to guess but quick for you to remember. Never share this to others.
  6. Click Next and wait for the key generation to complete.
  7. Click Finish once done.

Sharing Your Public Key and Adding Public Keys to Your List

Once you have generated public and private keys, you may share your public key to others so that they can start sending encrypted messages to you. Here’s how you can send your public key.

  1. Click the PGP icon on your system tray and select PGPkeys.
  2. Click on your keypair and copy the public key by clicking on Edit then Copy. You may also press CTRL+C on your keyboard.
  3. Prepare an email to your intended recipient as you normally do and paste the public key on the body of the email by pressing CTRL+V on your keyboard or clicking Edit then Paste.

People who have your public key would now be able to send encrypted messages to you. If you want to send them an encrypted message too, you would need to add their public key to your keyrings and this can be done by following these steps:

  1. Ask them to send you their public key.
  2. Copy their public key starting from the line that says —–BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK—– to the part that says —–END PUBLIC KEY BLOCK—–.
  3. Press CTRL+C on your keyboard to copy or click Edit then Copy.
  4. Go to your PGP keys list, click on the window and press CTRL+V on your keyboard or click Edit then Paste.
  5. The public key would be added on your list so you could start sending encrypted messages to that recipient.

Encrypting and Decrypting Messages

Here are the steps on how to send an encrypted message using PGP:

  1. Compose your email as you normally do.
  2. Once done writing the email, keep your cursor anywhere in its body, then click the PGP icon on your system tray.
  3. Choose Current Window and click on Encrypt and Sign.
  4. Double click the public key of the recipient or recipients you wish to send the encrypted message to.
  5. Click OK and enter your passphrase.
  6. Click OK once more and the message would be encrypted.
  7. Send it to the recipients.

If you received an encrypted message, here’s how you can decrypt it:

  1. Open the email that contains the encrypted message you wish to read.
  2. Select or highlight the encrypted message.
  3. Click the PGP icon on your system tray and click Current Window.
  4. Select Decrypt and Verify.
  5. Enter your passphrase.
  6. A new window will open containing the decrypted or plaintext message that you could read.

Reasons Why You Should Consider Using PGP

  • Secure Important Data from Theft

One of the most common concerns that Internet users have nowadays is information theft. Hackers find ways on how to gain access to data sent over the web. PGP uses strong encryption so it would be very difficult for hackers to decipher the encrypted information.

  • Better Security of Data on Cloud

Cloud storage is very popular today. It’s convenient as you don’t have to store information locally, freeing up space and it also prevents data from being lost if system crashes. It also allows you to access information across different devices easily. However, it’s also prone to glitches and attacks. Whatever happens to the cloud storage, if the data is encrypted, it would still not be possible for others to view your information.

  • Protect Your Privacy from Surveillance

You may be under surveillance for some reason and any data you send over the web could be easily viewed if sent in plaintext. PGP prevents vital information to be seen by prying eyes.

  • Ensure that Message is Sent from Verified Sender

Since there is a digital signature and the process involves verification, you can be sure that the message is really from the recipient and not from a third party that may be pretending to be that person for the hopes of fishing information from you.
